We at Keystone are always excited to welcome international students to Toronto!

As one of the most popular, exciting and multicultural Canadian cities, Toronto has so much to offer to tourists and those new to the city, as well as to those who have always lived here.

The summer in Toronto is particularly special, as various art and music festivals begin and outdoor parks become more accessible. There is something fun on literally every corner of this city.

So, we thought it would be a good idea to ask our teachers and staff for some of their recommendations of what to get up to in Toronto during the sunny months of July and August. If you’re a new student to Keystone or one who has been with us for a few years, these suggestions will serve as great ways for you to become immersed in Canadian culture and interact with your new environment.

Up first we have our Administrator, Ms. Janille. Born and raised in a suburb just outside of downtown Toronto, Ms. Janille went to post-secondary school at the University of Toronto and so she is very familiar with the busy downtown core and all its offerings.

Here are her opinions on what is most enjoyable about a Toronto summer:

What is your favourite Toronto summer tourist attraction?

I personally love spending a day at Toronto’s theme park, Canada’s Wonderland. My 3.5 year old son enjoys the rides in Kidsville and Snoopy Land, and the Splash Works water park is perfect for especially humid days. Even if you aren’t into amusement park rides, there are lots of nice places to sit and relax, lots of space to walk around, and stalls with really delicious food and drinks. A trip to Wonderland has been a staple of my summer vacation since I was a child!

What is your favourite outdoor activity to do in Toronto in the summer?

I really enjoy seeing outdoor concerts in Toronto, specifically at Budweiser Stage. This outdoor venue is really neat because you have a perfect view of the CN Tower from the lawn section, and when the CNE (a fair/exhibition that happens in Toronto at the end of every summer) is taking place, you can watch the ferris wheel go round and round while the musicians play. Lots of great acts have performed at Budweiser Stage and continue to do so when the weather is warm!

One of my favourite outdoor concerts I’ve ever seen was Dua Lipa at Echo Beach (right beside Budweiser Stage) – a night I will never forget!

What is your favourite indoor activity to do in Toronto in the summer?

I’m not a huge fan of the heat, but I do love air conditioning – so I like to spend most of my Toronto summer indoors. The summer months are, I find, a great time to explore the museums in the city, such as the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). It’s also super fun to watch the kids who are off from school for the summer exploring the museum and having so much fun, especially now that the new T-Rex exhibit is happening!

What is your favourite restaurant to eat at in Toronto in the summer?

Toronto has some awesome patios all over, but my favourite place to dine is Cactus Club (located super close to Keystone, on Adelaide Street!). The patio is slightly covered but still super bright and warm, and the food is excellent!

What is your favourite summer sport to watch in Toronto?

Since I’m half Italian, soccer is always going to be my summer sport of choice. It’s a total blast heading down to BMO Field to watch a TFC game under the evening sky and stars.

Do you think Toronto is more of a summer or winter city?

I am definitely more of a winter lover, honestly, but I think Toronto thrives in the summer. People are generally in a great mood because they don’t have to bundle up in a coat, boots, scarf, gloves, etc. and I find that everyone has a smile on their face. With all the parades and street markets and festivals, the vibe of Toronto is impeccable in the summer!

What is your number one piece of advice for someone visiting Toronto in the summer?

I would suggest walking anywhere and everywhere. If you have the option to take public transit, drive or walk, always choose to walk because you will be amazed by all the discoveries you can make just by wandering the streets of Toronto. You could end up in Yorkville or the Distillery District or High Park! There is just so much to see in this great city that it makes the most sense to take advantage of our sunny months in this way!
