What Are You Doing This Summer?

As the school year winds down and the countdown to summer begins, one question keeps coming up: “What are you doing this summer?”

For some people, the answer’s easy. Trips are already booked and suitcases have been mentally packed. Others are still figuring it out, scrolling through ideas, making plans with friends, or just hoping the summer comes together as it goes.

Either way, summer always feels like a bit of a reset, a chance to do something a little different: travel, learn a new skill, try something creative, or step into something completely unfamiliar.

What Are Students Doing This Summer?

We asked a few of our students what their summers are looking like this year.

Minyoung (Grade 7):

“My dad will be visiting from South Korea this summer, so my family is planning a trip within Canada. I’ll also be attending an indoor rock-climbing camp with my friends!”

Anastasiia and Rodion (Grade 12):

“My brother and I are travelling to Croatia with our mother this summer, where we’ll meet our father, who is currently in Ukraine. We will also be moving to Waterloo for university–– I’ll be studying Life Sciences there in September, and Rodion will be studying Management Engineering!”

Olivia (Grade 7):

“This summer, I’ll be spending time with my parents and my little sister, and I’ll be attending a horseback riding camp for two weeks. They have ponies there, and it’s tons of fun. This year will be my fifth year going!

I also signed up for STEM Makers Week at Keystone Summer Discovery Camps, which I’m really excited about. I’m looking forward to the marble run engineering activities, since I already have some experience with them. There’s also a field trip to a 3D printing hub, which I can’t wait for. I love 3D printing–– I even have a 3D printed hognose snake at home!”

An Option to Consider

If you’re still figuring things out, there are structured ways to spend your summer that don’t feel like traditional school. Why not spend this summer discovering your passions?

For example, programs like the Keystone School Summer Discovery Camps offer hands-on activities where students can explore interests like STEM, urban planning, entrepreneurship, and leadership through collaborative projects and field trips. These camps run in weekly sessions throughout July and are open to students from different schools and backgrounds. (read more here: Keystone Summer Discovery Camps)

It’s just one option—but it’s a good reminder that summer can be both fun and meaningful, without feeling like more school.

So… What Are You Doing This Summer?

Whether you already have plans or you’re still figuring it out–– and whether it’s camp, a job, a passion project, or just time to recharge–– the bigger question isn’t what you’re doing this summer, but how you want to remember it.

Because before you know it, September will be here, and you’ll be answering a different question: “How was your summer?”
