At Keystone School, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our students engage with the world around them through hands-on, real-life experiences that deepen understanding and spark curiosity. We believe that meaningful learning happens when students can connect theory with practice — exploring, questioning, and discovering through active participation.
Field Trips
At Keystone School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door — it comes to life through hands-on, real-world experiences. Each year, students take part in more than 35 field trips that connect curriculum to the world around them. These experiences vary from year to year and are thoughtfully tied to the topics students are exploring in class, ensuring authentic, relevant learning that deepens understanding and engagement.
Our field trips span across subjects — science, arts, humanities, and leadership — giving students the chance to apply what they learn in authentic settings. In the past year, students have investigated chemistry at TMU’s Spectroscopy and Photospectrometry Labs, studied genetics at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, explored cryptography and 3D design in university labs, and learned about sustainability at the Urban Wild Adventure Program and in High Park.
Students also connected with culture and history through visits to the Spadina Museum, Auschwitz Exhibit at the ROM, The Art of Banksy, and OCAD’s Graduate Exhibition, as well as immersive experiences like Earth: An Immersive Journey and the Van Gogh Exhibit.
Beyond academics, our trips strengthen community and leadership — from overnight adventures at Camp Muskoka and Outward Bound’s Climbing Tower to visits to the World Affairs Conference. These diverse and evolving experiences reflect Keystone’s belief that education should be lived, not just learned — encouraging students to see connections, think critically, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Guest Speaker Series & Alumni Talks
As part of our experiential learning approach, Keystone School’s Guest Speaker Series invites professionals and alumni from diverse fields to share their stories, insights, and expertise directly with students. These sessions are not traditional lectures — they’re interactive forums where students take the lead, interviewing guests, asking questions, and engaging in meaningful dialogue about real-world experiences and career journeys.
Last year, students had the opportunity to connect with guests such as:
- Veronique Vered-Perez, educator in French and Drama, who shared the value of creativity and language in education.
- Lawrence Heisler, researcher at MaRS Innovation, who discussed breakthroughs in cancer research and the importance of scientific collaboration.
- Corina Tudose-Angelova, AVP of Digital Performance and Customer Experience at Manulife, who provided insight into digital innovation and leadership in the corporate world.
- Artie Shlykov, Director of Demand Generation at How to SAAS, who spoke about entrepreneurship, marketing, and growth in the tech sector.
- Veronika Kozlova, Keystone alumna and University of Toronto Life Sciences, Class of 2024, who received a $50,000 scholarship and shared her journey from Keystone to university, reflecting on how the school’s supportive community and project-based learning approach prepared her for postsecondary success.
Through these conversations — and our growing Alumni Speaker Series — students gain firsthand exposure to the skills, mindset, and adaptability needed for success across disciplines. The program not only helps them explore future pathways but also strengthens Keystone’s sense of community, connecting today’s learners with the experiences of professionals and graduates who once stood in their shoes.
We look forward to welcoming another inspiring cohort of guest speakers this year, bringing new voices, ideas, and perspectives to our classrooms.
