During this time, teachers will discuss a variety of topics with the children such as weather, songs, stories, the daily agenda, daily news, etc. It is also a time for students to share, discuss &  work collaboratively with classmates.

At this time, teachers will introduce a hands-on activity/lesson that relates back to our weekly topic. Teachers will bring the children together for a small group time where they will focus on a particular learning experience; math lesson, science experiment, interactive writing, guided reading etc.

Tidying up after play is a crucial skill for children. It teaches them to care for their environment and supports the development of responsibility.

This period of time also includes hand hygiene and tidying up after snack. Ask us about our delicious healthy menu.

During this time, children will self-select from a wide variety of open-ended activities that teachers have prepared in the classroom (e.g. sensory play, painting, blocks, shelf toys, writing, playdough, book corner, loose parts etc.)

This is a time for children to learn through play and develop social and emotional skills (problem-solving, working cooperatively with peers, turn-taking, etc.)

This is also a time for teachers to do some observations of the children and assess the next steps in their learning.

During this period, teachers will have children engage in an art or craft project. This project will be based on a subject area learnt in class. Art projects will be done individually, in groups and as a class.

Students will share the responsibility of setting the table, passing out napkins, etc. Kids eat lunch together in the common area.

Weather permitting, students will have recess at St. James Park, Berczy Park or a group walk around the neighbourhood. If the weather does not permit, then children will have recess at the Learning Centre.

At this time, teachers will introduce a hands-on activity/lesson that relates back to our weekly topic. Teachers will bring the children together for a small group time where they will focus on a particular learning experience (math lesson, science experiment, interactive writing, guided reading).

Every morning, teachers will set up the space before the children arrive with a variety of different activities. New activities will be introduced to the learning centre on a weekly basis.

In the Learning Centre, students are given the opportunity to meet their own learning styles and interests ( math centre, alphabet games, reading, writing, manipulatives, gym, puzzles, memory games, house, drama centre, etc.). It gives students independence and autonomy in their learning.

They have the choice of working individually/and or in small groups. This is a time when teachers have a chance to work with children individually or in small groups on specific skills and areas of interest.

At this time, the children will be responsible for maintaining and tidying the learning centre.

This period of time also includes hand hygiene and tidying up after snack. Ask us about out delicious and healthy snacks.

This activity time is a chance for the children to reflect on their day and what they’ve learned with a small group discussion and reflection, as well as completing their Life Books on Friday.

What Is the Life book?

  • A life book is a tool we use here at Keystone to support children in their learning. It’s a way for children to reflect on their week and what they’ve learned in school and use their own experiences to share ideas.

This activity time is a chance for the children to reflect on their day and what they’ve learned with a small group discussion and reflection, as well as completing their Life Books on Friday.

This second circle time will conclude the day. Teachers will reinforce what the children have learned that day by discussing topics such as the weather, calendar time, relating back to the subject, reading stories and singing songs.

It is also a time for students to share, discuss &  work collaboratively with classmates.
